EUGENE — Call it quits? Not this group. But the La Grande 9/10-year-old Little League All-Star team dug a hole too deep to climb out of Saturday. The local all-stars’ bid of a state title fell short with 12-2 loss to Bend South. “It was an impressive run,” La Grande manager Tony Boyd said. “This young group did more than a lot of people expected. They never gave up and should hold their heads up high.” After overcoming a nine-run deficit the night before, La Grande let one big inning end its run. “I think we used up all our magic in that game,” Boyd said. “We hit everything right at (Bend South). They were able to get the little bloopers to get on base. That’s just baseball.” Bend South scored seven runs in the fifth inning to end the game. La Grande committed six errors in the inning. Boyd felt the team was waiting to pull of another miracle. “We had the bases loaded a few times,” Boyd said. “The boys didn’t take advantage of those chances, though. It seemed like they were waiting for the big comeback.” Alec Cranford paced La Grande with two singles in the game. Kurt Boyd finished with a double. La Grande finished third at the state tournament last season and second this season. “It’s up to the boys if they take first next year,” Boyd said, when asked about the slow climb up the state ladder. “They will definitely be the talent to win it all.”
