Comfort tabbed GOLís top player
Perfect Lady Tigers place four on Greater Oregon League’s first team
After another perfect season in the Greater Oregon League, the La Grande volleyball team (19-6, 9-0) has racked up plenty of postseason awards.
According to the GOL coaches, the Tigers dominated all-league awards.
The Lady Tigers landed four players on the GOL first team, led by player of the year Denise Comfort.
Comfort, a senior outside hitter, was one of the most consistent players in the league this season.
She had 92 kills in nine league contests to go along with 57 digs. Comfort had a 94.7 serving percentage with nine aces.
Senior setter Madison Elliott also earned first-team honors.
Elliott was key in orchestrating the Lady Tigers’ offense. She finished the league season with 149 assists with only seven ball handling errors.
Elliott added 55 digs, 27 kills and was 96.7 percent serving with 22 aces.
Also making the first team were seniors Breanna Partney and Olivia Trotter.
Partney, a middle blocker, finished with 43 kills and 38 digs in league play.
Trotter had 60 kills and 50 digs as an outside hitter.
She also had 28 serving aces while going 94.7 percent at the service line.
Lauren Mills was the lone La Grande player to earn second-team honors.
Mills, a senior middle blocker, finished with 30 kills, 20 total blocks and 13 digs.
Senior Anneliese Wiseman and junior Kendall Kirkland were honorable mentions.
Wiseman posted 29 assists, 28 kills and 15 digs during the league season.
Kirkland finished with 92 assists with just five ball handling errors.
She added 15 digs and four kills and was 98 percent serving with 15 aces.
Melinda Becker earned the coach of the year honor for the second consecutive season.
The Lady Tigers have won 19 straight GOL contests and lost only one set in league play this season.
La Grande made the round of eight in the state playoffs for the second straight year, bringing home a sixth-place finish.
