After starting out 2-0 in Greater Oregon League play, the La Grande girls basketball team has now dropped three of its last four conference games, including a 54-38 loss to Ontario Friday night.

“We’re going back to our old habits,” LHS head coach Doug Girdner said about the most recent loss.

La Grande started the game fast, taking an 8-0 lead in the first quarter. Ontario responded by scoring six straight points. LHS led 10-8 after one quarter.

After that, it was all Ontario.

OHS started the second quarter on a 7-2 run to take its first lead at 13-12. La Grande would answer with a couple of baskets, but Ontario closed out the quarter strong to take a 28-20 lead into halftime.

“We weren’t defending the basket very well. “I think at times we are lacking confidence out there,” Girdner said.

Ontario came out on fire in the third quarter, extending its lead to 41-24. The visiting Tigers closed out the quarter on a 12-2 run to lead 44-26.

It was more of the same in the fourth, as La Grande struggled to make shots from around the basket.

“We’re not shooting to score,” Girdner said. “We’re just throwing the ball up and hoping it goes in.”

Ontario continued its tough play throughout the fourth quarter to come away with a much-needed conference victory.

La Grande had eight different players score, with Breanna Partney and Tonya Alexander leading the way with six points.

Lauren Mills also chipped in with six points, while Mariah Sain and Shayla Powers both had five.

Ali Babij led Ontario with a game-high 13 points. Jenny Yano contributed 12 points, and Janelle Sherrell had eight.

“We just have to put this game behind us and come out ready to play next game,” Girdner said. “We have a big game coming up next weekend and we need to be ready.”

La Grande will host Baker Friday at 6 p.m.
