BAKER CITY The Cove girls basketball team knew what it had to do Friday to get past Columbia Christian in the semifinals of the OSAA-U.S. Bank Class 1A State Girls Basketball Championships.

The Leopards contained point guard Kinsey Tucker, who was unable to direct her teams offense as Cove went on to rout the Knights, 64-45.

She handles the ball well, Cove coach Dick Royes said. She starts all their offense. Shes a great shooter if youve got somebody thats not right in her face. You have to have somebody on her all the time.

Amy Puckett, Carrie Pereira and Jessie Johnson took turns defending Tucker. Royes said Johnson had the most minutes against Tucker, and it was effective in shutting her down.

Tucker finished the game with 10 points on 4-of-9 shooting and 2-of-3 from the free throw line.

Coves win puts it back in the title game for the first time since the Leopards won their third title in 1988. At 7 tonight, Cove plays Condon, which won four titles from 1997 to 2000 and was second to South Wasco County last year.

Cove will have to play without starter Amy Puckett, who injured herself in the third quarter of Fridays win.

Cove (18-4) jumped to a 33-17 halftime lead. The Leopards defense held the Knights to 19 percent shooting from the field.

In the second half, Columbia Christian made a couple of runs but never erased Coves lead.

These games against quality teams are not put away until youve got a big lead with maybe a minute or two minutes to go, Royes said.

Kathy Mann led Cove with 20 points and four assists. In addition, Kelcie Robinson had 12 points and 10 rebounds. Lisa Scheele added 11 points.

Jessica Bruce was the leading scorer for Columbia Christian with 14 points.

Cove also outrebounded the Knights 56-29.

Condon beat Cove in the first round of last years state tournament. Together, the schools have seven state titles.

Were so excited to be in the championship game, Royes said.
