COVE — Cove picked up two Old Oregon League volleyball wins over the weekend — but neither Wallowa nor Joseph made it easy.

Wallowa picked up its second win of the season, but it was only a set win, not a match as the Leopards won a 3-1 decision Friday (25-15, 25-12, 24-26, 25-20).

The set win improved the Lady Cougars to 2-24 for the year, though the team dropped to 0-2 in the OOL after losses to Imbler and Cove in the first week of league play. Wallowa has an 0-9 season record.

But the narrow two-point loss succeeded in spurring the Leopards to pulling out the victory in the fourth set.

The afternoon started with a strong 11-1 run that Cove turned into a 25-15 win.

In the second game, the Leopards turned 13-10 advantage into 25-12 win by running off 12 of the next 14 points.

That pattern changed in the third game when Wallowa rallied early to tie the score at 2 points each.

The teams tied again at 5-all, before Wallowa took its first lead of the game (6-5).

Cove rallied, but the Lady Cougars tied the game at 9-9 before taking the lead again. Wallowa would hold the lead or share it until Hailey Hulse’s kill gave the Leopards a 19-18 advantage.

Cove built a 23-20 advantage only to see it disappear with mistakes into another tie at 23-all.

After taking a 24-23 lead, Wallowa came back again to tie, then scored two more point for the win when a Cove hit sailed out of bounds.

The victory set off a celebration among the Wallowa players.

Ahead two games to one, Cove fell behind early, but rebounded to build a 10-4 advantage over the Cougars. They expanded it to 13-6 before Wallowa rallied to tie the game at 16-16.

They did it again to tie it at 18-all, before Cove pulled away for a final 25-20 decision that gave the Leopards the match.

The third game showed just how much the Lady Cougars are improving, said Wallowa coach Janea Hulse. “They are right there. They stuck together,” she said.

“If we can stay or  repeat that high, we’ll be doing good.”

Hulse also praised Macey Frei and Kristyn Young for their passing.

“They were really aggressive today.

“Effie Burns really stepped up and did much better.”

Samantha Johnston led the team with five kills and Taylor Harsfield had three serving aces to be bright spots for the Cougars, the Wallowa coach added.

Jocelyn Tanzey and Sally Mary Blair were very consistent Friday.

“I was proud of them,” the coach added.

“I expect to see more of it.”

That may be necessary with second-ranked Powder Valley coming to Wallowa Thursday.

For Cove coach Darcy Carreiro, the stumble in game three showed just how much more work the team needs to do.

“We took ourselves out of the game with mistakes.” Carreira said.

“At the net, I was impressed with Hannah Hulse’s play,” she said.

Although the team did well and won the game, the Cove coach said that team has a lot of work to do.

“We have got to eliminate errors. We have to take care of the ball.”

The Leopards are improving and are right in the thick of the Old Oregon League battle, she added.

“I have high expectations for the team.”

Cove sweeps Eagles

Against the visiting Eagles Saturday, the Leopards stumbled again before pulling out a 3-0 victory.

Cove barely held off an upset try in the second game to win a 32-30 decision, but handled the visiting Eagles better for 25-12 and 25-10 wins in the other two sets.

According to Joseph coach Jill Hite, the second game showed what Lady Eagles could do when they play together.

“We missed very few serves and I could not single a player out.

“They all played a real solid game.”

Still, Hite said the big problem the team needs to work on is unforced errors.

For Cove, Hannah Hulse and Hailey Hulse had strong games, while Mikayla Murchison had five ace serves.

“We have to play our pace and set our tempo,” Carreira added.

“We need consistency. We have to eliminate unforced errors.”

In the second game, the team got “way, way, way, way off-track,” she said.

“But they reeled it back in and won the game.

“Mikayla Murchison had a really good game.

“I like the energy she brings in. And the other girls feed off it.”

The Eagles are now 0-4 overall and 0-2 in the Old Oregon League.
