Top-ranked Mountaineers lose by one point on late College of Idaho shot, 83-82

The College of Idaho spoiled senior night for the No. 1-ranked Eastern Oregon University men’s basketball team Friday night, snapping the Mountaineers’ 12-game win streak with an 83-82 victory.

Anthony Brown’s lay-in with 7.6 seconds left put the Mountaineers in front, 82-81. But the College of Idaho went the length of the floor before a Ben Van Lith lay-in with 2.4 seconds remaining put the ’Yotes up, 83-82.

A Trent Roos half-court heave at the buzzer was off the mark and C of I handed EOU its first home loss.

“You have to give credit to College of Idaho,” EOU head coach Isaac Williams said. “Van Lith made a heck of a play at the end. He got past his guy and scored over the help. C of I deserves the credit. We didn’t lose it, they won it.”

C of I (14-12, 10-6) led by as much as seven points — 53-46 — with 14 minutes left in the game. But the Mountaineers (26-2, 14-2) used an 11-0 run to go up 57-53 with 11:55 left. From there, neither team led by more than four points and the lead changed hands 12 times.

College of Idaho, typically a 28-percent team from 3-point range, shot 11-of-21 in the game, while EOU hit 12-of-27 from deep.

Anthony Brown had a game-high 23 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the Mountaineers. Roos and Zach Anderson both chipped in 10 points, while Jason Mumm, J.D. Esters and Craig Tucker all finished with eight points.

Sydney Donaldson led C of I with 20 points, while Taylor Pruett had 19. Van Lith, Zach Peterson and Duncan Koga all had 10 points.

“I’m not disappointed in our team,” Williams said. “When you coach basketball, you’re so focused on your own team and your own story, and you don’t realize that the other team has a story. And you don’t know what that is.

“On a given night you can get beat. We understand that. We wanted to win (this game) just like we wanted to win every other game. But College of Idaho came in here and took it from us.”

The Mountaineers still lead the Cascade Conference by a game over No. 13 Warner Pacific (22-6, 13-3) with two games remaining in the regular season.

EOU will face off with the Knights Friday in Portland. Warner Pacific beat Northwest Christian and Corban this weekend.

The Mountaineers will wrap up the regular season against Concordia (15-11, 9-7) Saturday.
