Cubs advance to semis
IRRIGON — Enterprise/Joseph is one win away from a berth in the state title game.
The Cubs defeated Irrigon 10-3 Friday in the quarterfinals of the 2A/1A state softball playoffs and will play host to Heppner/Ione Tuesday at 4 p.m.
Enterprise/Joseph was hot from the start in Friday’s contest with the Knights.
The Cubs struck for two runs in the first inning after Amy Edison led off with a double.
An inning later Enterprise/Joseph added three more runs after a Katie Edison single, followed by a two-run double by Shelby Graning.
A Kylie Willis two-run double stretched the Cubs’ lead in the fourth inning, and Enterprise/Joseph was on its way.
Katie Edison was stellar on the mound for the Cubs.
The senior took a one hitter into the seventh inning before the Knights finally got to her.
Irrigon gounded out 13 times and struck out four times in the game.
The Cubs’ victory, coupled with the Mustangs’ 4-3 win over Union/Cove, sets up a showdown with Enterprise/Joseph and Heppner/Ione for a spot in the state championship game.
The Mustangs are the No. 1 seed, while the Cubs are seeded third.
The winner will face the victor between Glendale and Gold Beach in the championship game Friday in Corvallis.
