Cubs take Special District 6 softball crown

ENTERPRISE — The Cubs of Enterprise/Joseph won the Special District 6 championship Friday by defeating Union/Cove 14-4 in five innings.

The Lady Cats were able to get to Katie Edison right off the bat in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead.

But Enterprise/Joseph instantly responded in the bottom of the first, striking for five runs.

Union/Cove chipped away in the third with a three-run rally, but that’s as close as the Lady Cats would get.

The Cubs put up five runs in the fourth and four more in the fifth to put the 10-run mercy rule into effect. Edison got the win, striking out seven.

Dani Sturm was saddled with the loss for Union/Cove.

“Hats off to Enterprise,” coach Paul Phillips said. “You gotta have your A-game against them. We made a game of it, but Edison was bringing it.”

Despite the loss, the Lady Cats still qualify for the 2A/1A state playoffs.

Because Enterprise/Joseph won the district title, it will play host to Regis Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.

The Cubs enter as the No. 3 seed, while Regis is seeded sixth.

The Rams finished the regular season with a 15-9 overall record.

Union/Cove is the fifth seed and will travel to play at fourth-seeded Western Mennonite Wednesday at 3 p.m.

The Pioneers are 16-5 overall.

Regis is the defending state champions, while Western Mennonite was the runner up.

Glendale and Heppner/Ione both earned the No. 1 seeds in the postseason bracket, while North Douglas and Irrigon are the No. 2 seeds.

Lady Cats 15, Spartans 1

Union/Cove assured itself a spot in the state playoffs with a 15-1 victory over Pine Eagle in Friday’s opener.

The outcome was never in doubt as the Lady Cats put up three runs in the first, then struck for eight in the second.

Four of those runs came on Amber Fiorito’s grand slam.

Four more runs in the fourth inning rounded out the scoring for Union/Cove in the runaway victory.

“The kids knew they had to win to make state and they showed up ready to go,” Phillips said.

Sturm got the win on the mound, pitching three innings before Carsyn Roberts replaced her.
