ELGIN — After a 16-4 regular season record, the Elgin/Imbler softball team set out to show the Class 3A high schools it was for real.

An opening round game playoff game against Reedsport in the first round of the OSAA playoffs provided the perfect soapbox.

Elgin/Imbler won its fifth straight playoff game, the first in Class 3A, against the Braves 10-2.

“We wanted to let everyone know we are here,” first baseman Brandi Campbell said. “It was a good start.”

Elgin/Imbler’s bats surged like the wind on a blustery day. The 2007 Class 2A state champions pounded out 12 hits on the day. Campbell led the charge with three doubles, and drove in two runs.

“The girls adjusted to the pitching quickly,” Elgin/Imbler head coach Dick Griffin said. “More importantly, they did it early. That’s been the hardest thing for us to do this season. But the girls came out ready.”

Singles by the bottom of the order — Bejia Robbins and Megan Myers — staked Elgin/Imbler to a 5-0 lead after two innings.

In between Tara Ludwig averted disaster after cruising through the first inning.

The sophomore pitcher suffered from brief lapses in control. Still, she piled up 12 strikeouts in seven innings of work.

“We know (Tara) is going to get it done,” Campbell said. “That helps us relax on the field and at the plate.

Campbell put the finishing touches on the win with her third double in the sixth, driving in two runs.

“It’s a good start,” Griffin said. “But it’s only going to get tougher.”

Elgin/Imbler will travel to Santiam Christian Friday.

Union pounds Lakeview

UNION — Union softball beat visiting Lakeview, 18-0 in five innings Tuesday, advancing into round two at Salem Academy Friday (TBA).

An eight-run first inning was started by Jessica Reynolds’ home run, one of her three hits on the day.  She also hit her spots on the mound, striking out nine batters, walking two, all while holding Lakeview to just one hit.

Jessica Poe and Brittany Josephson each recorded doubles, helping the Bobcats advance.

“We just put pressure on them all day long,” Union coach Steve Robertson said.  “We just hit the ball hard. We only had two strikeouts.”

The Bobcats were focused, as they have been for recent weeks, Robertson said. They overcame early nerves, relaxed, then cruised to victory.

“Everybody did their job,” Robertson said. “We got the bunts down. We made good plays defensively.

“Just a total team effort.”
