ANCHORAGE — The Eastern Oregon basketball men struggled on the boards, and it cost them, as Alaska-Anchorage dominated the paint en route to a 94-70 win at the AT&T Alascom Jamboree.

Eastern, playing in its first official game, managed only 22 rebounds for the game, compared to 47 for the NCAA Div. II Seawolves.

Eastern gave up 13 offensive boards to the Seawolves in the second half.

"That was the worst display of defensive rebounding in a half since I've been around (at Eastern)," said coach Art Furman.

Furman thought the rebounding woes might have been caused by a large number of new players for Eastern making their debuts for the Mountaineers.

The big rebounding edge translated into nine more shots for the Seawolves (65 to Eastern's 56), nine more made field goals (32 to 23) and 17 more free throw attempts (31 to 14).

The struggles on the board wasted a great Eastern effort from beyond the three-point arc. The Mountaineers made 13 out of 27 three-point shots. Guard Tyree Jones led the way, hitting 5-for-9 from three-point land and scoring 29 points.

Meanwhile, newcomer Bryan Rabas hit 5-for-10 from beyond the arc and scored 17 points.

"He showed us what he can do when he gets it going," said Furman.

Furman said the men actually played a strong first half. Eastern trailed just 42-36 at the half, and cut the lead to four as Jones hit a bucket to open up the second half. Then Alaska-Anchorage went on a 13-0 run to take a 55-38 lead. The Seawolves never looked back.

Furman said the Seawolves are a good team which won its first game at the tournament 101-72 over Hawaii Pacific. Alaska-Anchorage will be playing Big East power Seton Hall later this season in the Great Alaskan Shootout.

Eastern plays Hawaii Pacific tonight. Furman said the Sea Warriors, another Div. II team, are actually bigger than Alaska-Anchorage, so Eastern will have to buckle down on the boards.

Brock Canady, another new Mountaineer, shot 2-for-2 from beyond the arc and finished with eight points.

Alaska-Anchorage was led by Aaron Lawrence with 19 points and Peter Bullock, who had 18 points and 12 rebounds.
