EASTERN VOLLEYBALL LOOKS FORWARD TO NEXT SEASON
It was a rebuilding year for the Eastern Oregon volleyball team, but first-year coach Ryan Platt is confident about next season.
"We're really looking forward to next year," he said.
Eastern (6-17 overall, 4-14 Cascade Collegiate Conference) closed the season Saturday at Cascade College.
In the beginning of the season, the team was still adjusting to a new system and each other. The Mountaineers struggled through the first couple of weeks of the season, losing their first five matches.
"It was kind of hard at first," Platt said. "The girls picked up things really fast and really well."
Platt said his different style of passing took a while for the team to learn, but the women did better toward the end of the year after getting the system down.
He said defensive specialist Emily Lee did a good job passing.
Defensive specialists Tara Daly and Rhianna Stafford were also strong coming off the bench with serving and defense, he added.
Platt said Kaki McLean and Misty Jenkin transferred in after not getting any playing time last year. The pair came through with big seasons.
McLean led Eastern with 3.12 kills per game and 3.49 digs per game.
Platt said Erin Phelps did extremely well this year in a new position after playing in the middle last year.
He said he was proud of the girls and "things are looking up next year."
Platt said he will be doing a lot of recruiting now, and he hopes that will help.
"We'll be working hard for next year," he said.
