Beating Albertson College feels so good for the No. 16-ranked Eastern Oregon women's basketball team.

"We love beating Albertson," Eastern's Jamie Jo Cant said smiling. "Nothing compares to it."

In 2002, the 'Yotes stunned the Mountaineers at home in the Cascade Collegiate Conference tournament semifinals. The Mountaineers captured their first-conference title that season.

The Mountaineers won the conference title this season and had a 16-game win streak going into the first round of the playoffs Tuesday against Albertson.

"We wanted to come out and prove we were for real," Eastern's Christy Smith said.

The No. 1 seed Mountaineers sent that message to the No. 8 seed 'Yotes with their 82-58 victory. They improved to 24-2.

A 18-5 Mountaineer run near the end of the first half broke the close game the 'Yotes led 12-11 with 13:22 left.

"We're playing with a tremendous amount of confidence," Eastern coach Anji Weissenfluh said.

She said Smith played well offensively and defensively. Smith scored eight points, pulled down seven rebounds, had one block and two steals.

Candice Davis led the Mountaineers with 19 points.

"We were pounding the ball into her," Weissenfluh said.

Davis' jumper gave the Mountaineers a 30-point lead at 65-35 with 9:23 remaining in the game.

Weissenfluh said point guard Tricia Haddock controlled the team well.

Haddock had six assists and 13 points, including three 3-pointers.

"I felt it," she said about her 3-point shot. "I knew I was open."

She said her first 3-point attempt was an air ball, but after that "at least they swished."

Haddock swished a 3-pointer with three seconds left before halftime. The Mountaineers led 38-23.

Cant said the Mountaineers did not know the score until a deadball or timeout.

She said they are always focused on the game.

Cant hit two 3-pointers and finished with 18 points.

"I have to shoot (the 3-pointer) to open up the post," she said.

Cant said the ‘Yotes were daring her to shoot the 3-point shot.

She said the ‘Yotes had to respect the shooting of guards Haddock, Smith, Christie Weaver and herself.

Weaver added nine points and six rebounds. Cory Nelson had seven rebounds.

"It was just a good win," Cant said smiling.

Haddock said the crowd was awesome, emotions were running high and they want to keep it going.

"We want OIT," Cant said.

The Mountaineers host OIT at 7 p.m. Friday in the CCC semifinals. The game can be heard locally on KEOL 91.7 FM, or on the Internet at www.eou.edu/webcast.

OIT pounded Western Baptist 77-55 in Tuesday. OIT's Katya Spiecker scored 17 points and had six assists. Nikki McElligott had a double-double with 15 points and 15 rebounds. Lois Shoemaker added 12 points.

No. 2 seed Northwest pounded No. 7 seed Southern Oregon 122-88, while No. 3 Warner Pacific beat No. 6 Evergreen 73-65.
