EASTERN WOMEN TOE THE LINE TO BEAT PACIFIC

The Eastern Oregon women found a new way to win Friday, blowing a close game open in the final two minutes by shooting 14-for-16 (87.5 percent) from the free throw line.

Despite being racked by the flu bug, Eastern won 90-72 to push its record to 5-1. The Mountaineers scored 90 points for the third time this season, and are averaging 82.7 points a game.

The game was still in doubt with 2:59 left and the Mountaineers ahead 74-65. But, after a Christy Smith bucket, the Boxers began fouling and Eastern hit the 14 free throws to outscore the Boxers 16-7 down the stretch.

Five Mountaineers scored in double figures, but just as importantly, three Eastern women had double figures in rebounds. In fact, Eastern came within a single assist of having four players with statistical double-doubles.

Eastern coach Anji Weissenfluh said Eastern's rebounding edge (52-41) was critical.

"That's the best we've rebounded all year," she said. "The rebounding advantage was the key."

Weissenfluh said this was a big game for the Mountaineers because Pacific is a good team that has beaten some other teams in the Cascade Conference.

Weissenfluh also credited Tricia Haddock and Michelle Kinley for toughing it out the entire game. She said they were so ill with the flu that they were both throwing up at halftime.

"I didn't think they were going to come out for the second half," she said.

Haddock ended up scoring 17 and dished out nine assists, while Kinley scored 17 points to go with her 12 rebounds, which included eight offensive rebounds.

Jamie Jo Cant, who hit four 3-pointers, led Eastern with 23 points. She also had 10 rebounds.

Cory Nelson was the third Mountaineer with a double-double, as she had 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Eastern made 24-of-32 free throws for the game and fouled out three Boxer players, including Pacific's leading scorer DeeDee Arnall.

Eastern plays at Walla Walla College today. This is a team Eastern has already beaten 83-42 this season.
