EASTERN WOMEN WIN 10TH IN A ROW

By C.J. Gish

Observer Staff Writer

Over the past decade, Southern Oregon made a living beating Eastern Oregon University on a regular basis.

Brooke Sellards made sure that didnt happen again Saturday by scoring 34 points as the hosting Mountaineer womens basketball team won its 10th straight game, 88-82.

At the beginning of the season our goal was to get to the .500 mark, Sellards said. Now we have to set new goals.

We have good team chemistry and were able to finish (games) this year.

It marked the first time Eastern had beaten the Raiders since 2000 in a series Southern has dominated since 1990 winning 16 of the last 21 meetings between the Cascade Collegiate Conference foes.

We seem play to the level of our competition, so bring on the tough teams, Eastern coach Anji Weissenfluh said.

Melissa Cores layup with 7:54 left in the second half gave Southern a 78-77 edge; a score that remained unchanged for nearly three minutes until Heather Epeldi gave Eastern a 79-78 lead on a layup.

From there, Eastern (10-1 overall, 3-0 league) gradually pulled away. Epeldi and Coffin made two free throws each, and Coffin blocked a 3-point attempt, leading to a Tricia Haddock putback layup for an 85-78 lead with 2:57 left.

A Tara Murphy turnaround baseline jumper pulled Southern within 85-82 at the 1:05 mark, but Sellards was fouled on her own putback attempt and made one free throw, followed by two Haddock free throws, to seal the game.

Were playing good team ball. I dont even know if our girls know how good we are, Weissenfluh said. The thing is, the girls know we can improve.

Sellards shot to a fast start, scoring 18 of her 22 first-half points in the first 10 minutes of the game.

Eastern built a 45-30 lead with 3:59 left in the first half following 3-pointers from Haddock, Jamie Jo Cant and Rachelle Stockman during a two-minute span.

But a Mountaineer scoring slump led to a 19-5 run by the Raiders to tie the game 49-all with nine seconds left in the half.

Cant split a pair of free throws with five seconds left to give Eastern a 50-49 edge at the half.

In the second half, Southern grabbed the lead and built it to 71-66 before the Mountaineers rallied back.

We were a little fatigued tonight, Weissenfluh said. Plus, we scored all of our second-half points against a zone, which we havent practiced against.

We maintained our composure. Its a compliment when teams play a zone on you because that means youre beating them in man-to-man.

Coffin scored 18 points and grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds. She was a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line and also blocked three shots.

Haddock had 11 points and three steals, and Sellards had nine rebounds. Cant added five assists.

Sara Marks led Southern with 20 points. Jaime Stanford added 16 points and 11 rebounds.

Eastern hosts Albertson Tuesday.
