ELGIN BULL RIDING DRAWS RECORD CROWD
ELGIN Ethan Graves won the Mark Nichols Memorial Bull-O-Rama Friday to open up the Elgin Stampede weekend.
The 16-year-old California native received 83 points in the first-go. He was one of seven cowboys competing in the short-go.
A record crowd was on hand to watch Friday's action. According to Stampede director Bud Scoubes, more than 1,700 people attended the event. "We need some more seating, I tell you," he said.
None of the seven cowboys in the short-go could stick an 8-second ride, so Gray walked away with $1,133.33 for having the highest point total from the first-go.
Graves started riding bulls when he was 6 years old.
The six other cowboys who qualified for the short-go were Ty Joslin, Cameron Mulrony, last year's Mark Nichols Memorial Bull-O-Rama winner Zeb Lanham, Jason Boyd, Justin Bain and Codi Burgess.
Burgess barely qualified for the short-go as his bull bucked and jerked, but Burgess hung tight. Burgess' ride was good for 73 points.
Lanham finished second with 80 points, followed by Mulroney's 76. Joslin had 68 points.
The bulls were not cooperative Friday as eighteen cowboys got bucked off before the 8 seconds were up.
One of those cowboys was last month's Eastern Oregon Livestock Show bull champ Vic Dubray of La Grande. Dubray will ride today in the PRCA rodeo.
