ELGIN They played baseball in Elgin Tuesday and thanks to the Huskies 17-1 lead over the McLoughlin JV, the game didnt go more than five innings.

A steady rain threatened the non-league game, but Elgins nine-run fourth inning invoked the mercy rule after Mac-Hi didnt score in the top of the fifth.

We tarped up about 2:30, just completely tarped our infield, Elgin coach Gordie Simons said. We got going about 4:30. We did get five innings in. The ground held up pretty good, (but) its a good thing we dont have a home game coming up.

Elgins field may need time to heal after being played on in the rain, but you can blame the Huskies for running around the bases for those 17 runs. Elgin already had an 8-1 lead when Ryan McKone led off the fourth with a home run.

His teammates responded by scoring eight more runs in the inning.

Tyler Davis was 3-for-3 on the day, while McKone, Skyler Payne and Codi Burgess were all 2-for-3. Ricky Foster had three RBIs and Burgess and Eddie Diaz each had two RBIs.

Burgess went the distance on the mound, giving up five hits and one walk and striking out three batters.

He did a good job considering all the circumstances, Simons said. The kids did real good defensively.

Elgin (5-2) returns to Wapiti League action with a doubleheader Saturday at Union. The Huskies dont play at home until a JV game April 23 against Imbler.
