REDMOND — The Eastern Oregon High School Rodeo Club had about as good a day at the state finals as it could have had Thursday.

Kristi Case of Elgin won the first round of breakaway roping, Kelsey Gordon of Summerville was second in barrel racing and all five members placed in the top 10 and earned points at the Oregon High School Rodeo Association State Finals.

"Every contestant we brought down here placed," said Joanie Cant, adviser to the club.

Case advanced her hopes to reach the National High School Finals by winning the breakaway roping round with a time of 3.27 seconds. The top competitors in each event advance to the national finals next month in Farmington, N.M., while the next tier goes to the Silver State International Rodeo in Nevada.

Gordon's barrel race time was 17.94 seconds.

Two local competitors placed in team roping. Jace Manjarres of La Grande and his teammate were fourth at 14.94 seconds, while Sally Jane Brown and her teammate were sixth at 18.2.

Brown advanced her hopes in the all-around competition by taking seventh in breakaway roping at 6.05 seconds and ninth in pole bending at 22.161 seconds.

Manjarres earned all-around points by finishing fifth in calf roping at 15.70. Travis Hampton of La Grande was 10th in calf roping at 24.43.

The second round runs today with performances this afternoon and tonight. Finals are tomorrow.
