MONMOUTH — The desire to win was evident on the first day of the OSAA Class 2A State Track Meet Friday at Western Oregon University.

Elgin's Vance Horn vaulted 13 feet, 9 inches on his first attempt and eventually won the competition at that height. After the event, Horn had not realized he was the state champ.

"I'm still in shock," he said.

Horn vaulted 12-6 at the Wapiti League District Meet. He jumped higher at state.

Horn was one of three vaulters left at 13-6. Horn cleared the height on his first attempt. He looked up at the bar and rolled off the mat.

Horn was just heating up.

The bar moved to 13-9. Horn and Kennedy's defending champion Kevin Ellingson remained in the hunt to jump at that height. Horn cleared 13-9 on his first attempt.

He joked after the announcer erred about moving the bar down.

Horn said, "Whoa. It's going down. I like this place."

The bar went up to 14-0. Horn and Ellingson did not clear the height in their three attempts.

"I had to ride the bus a long way and did not come here for nothing," Horn said.

Horn's aunt, Deb Schram, said her nephew muscled it up to win the title.

Enterprise's Krista Stangel nearly beat defending champion Catlin Gabel's Jolee Van Leuven in the 3,000-meter run. Van Leuven was looking over her shoulder down the final stretch as Stangel kicked hard to the finish line.

Van Leuven won the race in 10 minutes, 33.26 seconds. Stangel took second finishing in 10:33.45. Union's Ashley Sharratt finished seventh.

Enterprise's Nicole Santiago and Tony Swart advanced into hurdles finals today. Santiago was seventh overall in the 300-meter preliminary. Swart was sixth in the 300-meter preliminary.

Elgin's Amber Looslie and Kelsey Davis advanced into finals today, as well.

Looslie finished her 800-meter run preliminary in 2:23.60 to finish second. In the pole vault, Looslie finished sixth with a 8-6 mark.

Davis finished seventh in the 200-meter dash preliminary in 27.35. She was second in the 400 at 59.54.

Elgin's Seth Follett took eighth in the discus throw with a 134-5 effort.

Joseph's Cole Lathrop and Kyle Hook medaled in their respective events.

Lathrop was fourth in the high jump at 6-2. Hook threw the javelin 157-0 for fourth place.

In the 4x400-meter relay, Joseph won its preliminary with a time of 3:32.71. On the relay were Randall Eschler, Tristan Patton, Lathrop and Otten.

Otten qualified individually for the 400-meter run final. He was fourth in the preliminary with a 51.95 time.

Joseph's Julie Butterfield tied for fourth in the pole vault with a 8-6 mark.

The finals began this morning. The 1A meet takes place today, also at Western Oregon University.
