ENTERPRISE HOPES WINNING TEAM SHOWS

By Pat Perkins

Observer Staff Writer

Enterprise football fans have to wonder what team will show up for Saturdays first-round state playoff game against Scio: the team that lost to Union and Joseph or the team that beat the three other teams that finished tied at the top of the Wapiti League.

Enterprise enters the playoffs with a losing record (4-5) that was secured after a 48-25 loss to Joseph.

The game starts at 1 p.m.

I couldnt tell you what happened against Joseph. Were still a young team. We started four sophomores and one freshmen on defense, Morgan said.

Our goal at the beginning of the year was to get this team in the playoffs. And especially after the start, going 0-3, a guy has to wonder. These kids stepped up and they did the things they had to do and beat the teams they had to beat.

One of those teams was Nyssa, the Wapiti Leagues other playoff team, in a game where Enterprise had just 20 yards offense. Kyle Crawford returned an interception and a kickoff for a touchdown, however, and a bad snap on a Nyssa punt gave Enterprise the points it needed to win.

Defense and special teams beat Nyssa. If you win, theres a reason you won, Morgan said.

Crawford had more than 1,100 yards rushing and 12 touchdowns. The key may be quarterback James Huffman because of Scios tendency to pack the defensive line and bring linebackers on a blitz.

Our quarterback has to stand tall and hit the receivers on the short routes, Morgan said.

Scio (7-2) lost to Enterprise in the first round of the playoffs three years ago, when Enterprise marched to the state title game. Scio, ranked seventh in the state, ran the ball then and it runs the ball now.

The films we have this year are basically the same as the films Enterprise has from three years ago, Morgan said. I think they have a little more speed, but theyre not as big.

We dont have as much depth on our defensive line as we did then. Inside there you just get beat up on the defensive line.

Regardless of the outcome, one has to consider Enterprises year a success not many 4-5 teams make the playoffs.

Im proud of these guys for doing what theyve done this year, Morgan said. Nobody expected them to do this. Im proud of the way they stepped up this year when things werent going so well.
