EOU HOSTS ALUMNI SQUADS
When Eastern Oregon Uni-versity men's basketball head coach Ryan Looney inherited the program in April he noticed a gaping hole in the Mountaineers schedule.
In November, a time when most teams are playing at least a game a week, if not more, EOU plays just one game over a span of 20 days.
That one game, tonight's 7:30 contest vs. an EOU alumni squad, isn't even a regular season game, it's an exhibition.
"That's not something I would have necessarily done with the schedule," Looney said. "But it ended up being exactly what we needed.
"Our roster is a little bit depleted right now."
Injuries to sophomore Seth Pennington (sprained ankle) and senior Neil Collins (broken nose) will keep the two out of the contest.
Freshman Andre Ferguson will not play in the alumni game because of personal reasons.
With them inactive, Looney will have to make due without three key members of his rotation.
Not the ideal situation for the 0-2 Mountaineers, but better to happen now than in the middle of what is sure to be a rugged Cascade Collegiate Conference schedule.
EOU heads back into regular season action on the 26th in Helena, Mont., for the Carroll College Kiwanis Classic before returning to La Grande on the 30th to take on Walla Walla College.
The 1-0 EOU women's team will also match up with an alumni squad at 5:30 tonight.
The lady Mountaineers return to regular season play next Saturday against Concordia (Calif) College in La Grande.
