EOU LOSES BATTLE ON BOARDS

A breakdown on the boards and at the offensive end doomed the Eastern Oregon Mountaineers Friday.
Outrebounded and outscored down the stretch, Easterns mens basketball team lost its first game of the season, and the first game of the Quinn Classic, 65-51 to Carroll (Mont.).
They got key offensive rebound putbacks that gave them new life and that killed us, Eastern Oregon coach Art Furman said. They had three or four easy baskets.
Carroll outrebounded Eastern 33-21, including a 12-3 edge on the offensive boards, normally a strength for Furmans teams.
Carroll plays Trinity Western (British Columbia) at 7:30 tonight at Quinn Coliseum. The tournament ends Sunday with Eastern playing Trinity Western at 1:30 p.m.
The Mountaineers (2-1) found themselves in an unusual position midway through the second half: in the lead. Eastern had to come from behind in its two wins, and it came back from a three-point halftime deficit to take a four-point lead, 44-40, with 13 minutes left.
The key to the comeback was point guard Jerome Toby. Easterns only offensive option early in the game, Toby passed the ball more in the second half, getting four assists in a row in the run that gave Eastern the lead.
But Carroll (6-3) turned to its big guns, getting a pair of baskets from Gary Lynch as part of an 8-0 run.
Tobys 3-pointer with 6:53 left cut Carrolls lead to 50-49. Eastern wouldnt score for more than six minutes, until Toby hit a jumper with 42 seconds to play.
In fact, Toby scored Easterns final seven points over the last 13 minutes. The senior finished with 21 points, nine assists and three steals.
Furman took some of the blame for his teams struggles offensively.
Maybe I need to (give) those two to three other guys on the bench some looks if were not getting it done, he said.
Early in the game, Eastern had problems getting the ball near the basket. Forward Jonathan Stoddard took just two shots. The other starting forward, Trevor Exline, did not score in the first half, but scored on several of Tobys passes early in the second half for eight points. Center Brad Williams had six points.
Shane Gamradt led Carroll with 19 points. Jeff Mason had 17 points and 11 rebounds. Kirk Stiles had 13 points and Gary Lynch added 12.
Eastern only attempted three free throws, getting there for the first time with 8 minutes to play.
