EOU ROLLS TO WIN OVER ST. MARY'S
ORANGE, Calif. Eastern Oregon University players and coaches got their minds back on softball Tuesday as the Mountaineers extended their record at the SunWest Invitational to 4-0 with a 10-2 victory over St. Mary's University (Minn.) in six innings.
Rain returned to southern California, and EOU's game against University of St. Thomas (Minn.) was suspended Tuesday. When play was stopped, EOU trailed 7-4 in the bottom of the fifth inning. The game could be resumed today at that point. If it cannot be completed, the score would revert back to the end of the fourth inning, when it was tied, 4-4.
EOU (7-3) was to close out the tournament with three games today. The Mountaineers were to face Doane College (Neb) this morning. They were slated to play Hope International University (Calif.) at 3:30 p.m.Following will be a make-up game against College of St. Catherine (Minn.) at 8 p.m.
In EOU's win over St. Mary's, Hannah Shelley, Beth Hull and Heather Tandberg all hit home runs. Shelley's homer was her fourth in two days.
Shannon Rasmussen (4-2) pitched the win, allowing five hits. She struck out two.
Hull's first homer of the season scored Vanessa Shelton and Rasmussen in the top of the first inning. After St. Mary's tied the game, EOU went ahead 5-1 on a solo shot by Tandberg in the third.
A two-run homer by Shelley, her fifth of the season, in the fifth gave the Mountaineers a 7-1 lead as Rasmussen scored ahead of her.
Shelley delivered an RBI single in the sixth, scoring Shelton. Hull then drove in Rasmussen and Shelley with a double for a 10-1 EOU cushion.
Later Tuesday against the University of St. Thomas, EOU fell behind 4-1. The Mountaineers battled back, tying the game 4-4 in the fourth. St. Thomas scored three times in the last of the fifth and had two runners on base with two out when the game was suspended due to rain.
