EOU WINS 12TH STRAIGHT THE HARD WAY

By C.J. Gish

Observer Staff Writer

Brooke Sellards left the gym with her left arm iced and in a sling. Tricia Haddock had ice taped to her left calf while walking around the hallway outside the trainers room.

A banged up and emotionally drained Eastern Oregon womens basketball team looked as if it needed a good nights rest after tying the school consecutive-win record Friday night in beating visiting Northwest, 80-55.

The score was deceiving for the Mountaineers, who won their 12th-straight game and became the last of the unbeaten Cascade Collegiate Conference teams after Western Baptist defeated Concordia Thursday.

With 9:16 remaining, Eastern (12-1 overall, 5-0 league) held a slim 56-52 lead over the pesky Eagles, who entered the game with a 3-15 season record.

A Sellards 3-pointer started a 16-1 run over a five-minute span that put the game away for Eastern.

Ive been preaching all week that Northwest will knock some people off before the season is over. Theyre extremely athletic, Eastern coach Anji Weissenfluh said.

The Eagles (3-16, 1-4) didnt look great in the first half, but were able to gain a 34-32 lead due to 15 Mountaineer turnovers and by grabbing 13 offensive rebounds.

We didnt do a good job taking care of the ball, Weissenfluh said.

Weissenfluh knew the Mountaineers might have lost a little steam and focus after playing three big conference games in a row against Western Baptist, Southern Oregon and Albertson this past week.

Its hard to keep up the intensity. We played tired and mentally werent there. (Northwest) was more physical than us, and we

didnt make good decisions. We escaped with a win.

Early on, it looked as if Eastern was on its way to another fast start. After falling behind 5-4, Julie Coffin drove to the basket for a layup, followed by a Sellards layup and a fastbreak basket from Tricia Haddock for a 10-5 Mountaineer edge.

From there, though, the Eagles went on a 9-2 run to take a 14-12 lead.

Eastern switched the momentum and retook the lead 29-18 on back-to-back Michelle Kinley baskets, a Sellards 3-pointer and

putback.

But turnovers plagued the Mountaineers, along with poor defensive rebounding, giving Northwest an opportunity to stay in the game.

Eastern turned the ball over four times in a little over a minute and Northwest capitalized with Katy Lockard and Moriah Hover hitting back-to-back 3-pointers. A Kim Haley putback layup and a Hover hook shot gave the Eagles a 34-32 halftime lead.

We were feeling the pressure, Weissenfluh said. We were down by two and we could have tightened up, but we kept after it.

Lockard hit two more 3-pointers early in the second half to put Northwest ahead, 42-36.

Rachelle Stockman then gave Eastern a needed offensive burst to retake control of the contest. Stockman hit two 3-pointers and banked in a long jumper as the Mountaineers on a 17-3 run, giving Eastern a lead it would never relinquish.

I feel more pressure with teams like these. They have nothing to lose, Weissenfluh said. Evergreen is going to be scrappy and tough and they get up and down the floor.

Eastern hosts Evergreen State tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Quinn Coliseum.

Sellards finished with 24 points and eight rebounds. Stockman added 13 points, and Danielle Dianda had 13 points and nine rebounds off the bench. Coffin had 11 points and seven rebounds, and Heather Epeldi came off the bench to grab 12 rebounds. Haddock had nine assists, eight rebounds and two steals.

Lockard led Northwest with 14 points, and Hover had 13 points.

Eastern outrebounded Northwest 60-38, and shot 50 percent to the Eagles 25.9. The only thing that kept Northwest in the game was Easterns 28 turnovers, getting off 85 field-goal attempts to the Mountaineers 56, and grabbing 23 offensive rebounds.
