EOU WOMEN REMAIN IN 1ST PLACE

SALEM With first place in the Cascade Collegiate Conference at stake Saturday, the Eastern Oregon Mountaineer women had their finest road victory of the season, a 76-64 victory over Western Baptist.

Julie Coffin had 24 points and 14 rebounds and Jamie Jo Cant scored 12 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead 13th-ranked Easterns win.

Eastern (19-3 overall, 12-2 conference) trailed by seven at halftime but forced the Warriors into 29 percent shooting in the second half.

The Mountaineers, ranked 13th nationally, held a huge advantage at the free throw line, turning 35 Warrior fouls into 33-for-50 shooting at the line.

We pounded the ball inside, and Julie Coffin, she really carried us on her back, Eastern coach Anji Weissenfluh said. She really stepped up rebounding-wise and offensively. She got us back in the game.

Eastern had a 65-62 lead with three minutes to play, but Western Baptist (21-10, 11-4, 23rd nationally) would get just two free throws the rest of the way. Easterns final 11 points came at the line.

Southern Oregon used its 83-72 win Saturday over Albertson to move into second place in the conference, a game behind Eastern at 11-3.

The Mountaineers can clinch a share of the conference title with a win in one of its two remaining games.

Eastern plays fifth-place Concordia Friday and seventh-place Cascade Saturday at Quinn Coliseum.
