The Eastern Oregon women Wednesday night let Evergreen State hang around, then allowed the Geoducks to completely take over.

But, in the end, the women hit some clutch shots down the stretch to pull out a hard-fought 75-68 win.

The victory gives Eastern a 1-0 record in the Cascade Collegiate Conference (7-1 overall). Evergreen State came in to this game 1-10, but the Geoducks didn't play like a bad team.

Eastern controlled the action for much of the ragged game, but Evergreen State put together a huge run to grab the momentum in the second half.

In the final 1:30 of the game, a clutch 3-pointer by Tricia Haddock with two seconds left on the shot clock gave the Mountaineers the momentum to hold on for the win.

"I try to make my shots when we need them the most. Luckily it went in," Haddock said.

Eastern coach Anji Weissenfluh said, "We made it interesting. It's better to win ugly than to lose pretty."

Weissenfluh thought this game was important to show the women that even when they aren't playing that well, they are capable of winning.

"It gives us the confidence that we can pull a game out even when we're not on our ‘A' game," Weissenfluh said.

"We're satisfied with the win. A win is a win," said Haddock, who finished with 17 points.

Eastern had trouble the whole second half with Evergreen State's Kristen Zompetti, who hit five out of her six 3-pointers in the final 20 minutes.

Eastern had a fairly comfortable lead of 37-23 late in the first half when Evergreen State went on a 16-1 run to take a lead of 39-38 early in the second half. The game see-sawed back and forth until finally the score was knotted 66-66 in the waning minutes.

Michelle Kinley hit a basket to give Eastern a 68-66 lead, then Haddock made her clutch 3-pointer. Kinley added another basket in the final minute.

Eastern next plays at 5:30 p.m. Saturday against Northwest.
