EOU bounced at nationals

SIOUX CITY, Iowa — The first trip into the second round of the NAIA Division II women’s basketball tournament came to an abrupt end.

Following an upset win against Cardinal Strich, the Mountaineers came out cold during a 63-48 loss to Black Hills State University.

EOU shot 27 percent from the floor in the first half.

Black Hills built a 30-21 lead at the half while shooting 38 percent from the floor.

The Yellow Jackets from South Dakota pulled away on turnovers and post play.

Black Hills turned 20 Mountaineers turnovers into 16 points.

Lacey Haughian led the Yellow Jackets with 21 points and eight rebounds. She also chipped in five assists.

Along with Snjezana Dojcinovic’s 10 points and eight rebounds, Black Hills used its 38-26 points in the paint edge to pull away.

Seniors Sheena Henderson and Tiffany Ulmer countered with 13 and 10 points, respectively for EOU.

EOU guard Jenny Fiso scored 11 points coming off the bench.

Elise Hawes scored six points and pulled down six rebounds in her final game as a Mountaineer.

EOU finished the season 25-6, while Black Hills improved to 28-5.

Mountaineers run ends against Bobcats

POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. — A second-half slide sent the Mountaineers home from their first appearance at the national tournament Friday.

EOU fell to the 2006 nnational champions the College of the Ozarks 65-42.

The Bobcats trailed by 11 points midway through the first half. But a run by Ozarks trimmed the halftime deficit to 24-23.

EOU lost the lead in the opening minutes of the second half. The Bobcats opened the final half by scoring the first three baskets.

The Mountaineers went scoreless during an 11-minute stretch in which the Ozarks used a 11-0 run to pull away.

A typically sound EOU offense turned the ball over 25 times during the loss.

The Bobcats converted those miscues into 27 points.

Mark Carollo paced the Mountaineers with 24 points.

Paul Carollo pulled down 23 rebounds in a losing effort. Carollo tied the tournament record set by Von Gilbert of Bethel in 1995.

The Bobcats set a record for the best defensive performance by limiting EOU to 42 points.

Ozarks improved to 27-5 on the season, and the Mountaineers fell to 26-6.
