The Eastern Oregon University football team rallied to knock off Southern Oregon 38-37, with a touchdown pass from wide receiver Jace Billingsley.

Billingsley connected with Jason Hernandez on a 27-yard touchdown pass with 1:53 left in the game to give the Mountaineers the lead.

From there it was up to the defense to hold on against the Raiders’ offense, led by quarterback Austin Dodge.

The junior quarterback did his part, completing 4-of-4 passing on the final drive. Dodge’s last completion took Southern Oregon down to the Mountaineer’s 7-yard line. But, Adam Bese forced a fumble that Stanley Tucker jumped on, giving EOU the ball back.

Dominique Blackman kneeled on the ball twice, and the Mountaineers improved to 5-5 overall, and 5-4 in the Frontier Conference.

While EOU needed a win, all eyes were on running back Chris McGinnis-Parker, who needed 211 yards to set the single-season rushing record.

The senior finished with 103 yards on 19 carries. He’ll have one game left on the schedule, against Montana Western, to try to get the final 108 yards to break Kevin Sampson’s record set in 2010.

In the last meeting against the Bulldogs, McGinnis-Parker rushed for 198 yards on 27 carries.

McGinnis-Parker also caught five passes for 57 yards with a touchdown.

The Mountaineers fell behind 23-10 at the half, but outscored Southern Oregon 28-14 in the second half, including the final two touchdowns of the game.

Blackman capped a six play, 97 yard drive to pull EOU to within a score with 5:17 left in the fourth quarter.

The Mountaineer defense came up with another big play on the ensuing Southern Oregon drive.

The Raiders tried to run out the clock, but EOU stopped Dodge for no gain on a 4-and-1 run, setting up what would be the winning drive.
