EOU falls to Puget Sound

CALDWELL, IDAHO —Down by 17 points in the second half, the Eastern Oregon University women’s basketball team tried to come back, but fell short.

The Mountaineers lost to Puget Sound 82-77 to wrap up the Lady Yote Classic in Caldwell, Idaho, Saturday.

Nikki Osbourne hit a lay-in with 2:04 left in the game to pull the Mountaineers within two points, but Puget Sound hit its free throw shots to ice the game down the stretch.

Britteny Newcomb finished with a game-high 26 points, and Madeline Laan added 19 points off the bench.

The Mountaineers shot 44 percent from the field, but connected on just 22 percent of their shots from behind the arc.

Emily Sheldin led Puget Sound with 24 points. Amanda Froshay finished with 13 points and eight rebounds. Puget Sound shot 43 percent from the floor, and hit 63 percent of its 3-point shots.

EOU (7-3) will open Cascade Collegiate Conference play against Evergreen State College at 7 p.m. Friday in Olympia, Wash.

EOU takes down Wolves

CALDWELL, IDAHO — Walla Walla University grabbed a lead, but after making the opening basket of the game, not much else went right.

The Eastern Oregon University women’s basketball team cruised to a 96-34 win against the Wolves to open the Lady Yote Classic Friday.

The Mountaineers went on a 16-3 run following Walla Walla’s opening basket, and jumped out to a 44-16 lead by halftime.

The Mountaineers struggled to shoot the ball in the first half, but bounced back in the second and shot 43 percent from the field in the game. Walla Walla shot 20 percent from the floor in the 11th straight loss of the season.

Brittney Newcomb and Lauren Mills led EOU with 16 points, apiece. Newcomb has led EOU in six of the seven games she’s played this season. The senior was off from the field, shooting 3-of-11, but connected on all eight shots from the free-throw line. Newcomb also dished out eight assists.

Mills, a freshman from La Grande, beat her previous season-high. The 5-foot-10 guard scored 14 points in the last meeting with Walla Walla Nov. 23.

Taylor Riley went 6-of-9 from the field with 12 points.

Kelsey Hill led the Mountaineers with 10 rebounds.

Michaela Garcia paced the Wolves with 12 points, while Lauren Pernu finished with 10 points.

It’s the third straight win for the Mountaineers against Walla Walla this season.
