The Eastern Oregon University football team hosted a football camp last week on the EOU campus.
The week-long camp started July 19 and ran through July 22, and included high school kids from around the Northwest, including Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Nevada. Camp said that nearly 500 kids ranging from incoming high school freshmen to seniors made the trip to La Grande for the camp. The players are staying in the dorms on campus, and Camp added that every bed was taken and the dining hall was full each night. The camp consisted of three practices a day, with EOU coaches holding individual and team drills throughout each day. In the evening quarterbacks meet and go through particular drills to improve their skill set. Thursday consisted of a round-robin team tournament. “I really have to commend the counselors’ efforts this week,” Camp said. “They have worked really hard to make this successful. But what’s really surprised me is the way the kids have responded so well to everything.” The EOU coaching staff went about putting this camp together by getting out there and talking to high school coaches and getting them interested in being a part of the program. “It helps when you win. But me and my staff know a lot of people around the Northwest, and you just have to sell your program to them,” Camp said. Camp also added that one of the main benefits this week is the exposure that EOU gets. “We just want to get kids up here and show them what EOU and La Grande is really like. I’m real happy with the turnout,” Camp said. and how everything went this week,” Camp said.
