EOU gets NAIA seedings

SIOUX CITY, Iowa — The Eastern Oregon University women’s basketball team picked up one of four number-one seeds in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics’s national championship tournament, it was announced Wednesday.

The Lady Mountaineers (31-2) will play the Southwestern University Moundbuilders (23-7) from Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference Thursday, March 7, at 10 a.m. Pacific Standard time.

The 32-team, single-elimination tournament will take place from March 6 through 12 in Sioux City, Iowa, at the Tyson Event Center.

The championship kicks off at 8:30 a.m. CST on the first three days of competition, with eight games scheduled each day. Quarterfinal action tips off at 1 p.m. on March 9 with the semifinals slated for March 11 at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. The championship final, which will be televised live on CBS Sports Network, will start at 6 p.m. on March 12.

The Winfield-based school is located south of Wichita, near the Oklahoma border.

According to the school’s sports information department, the Lady Builders’ forwards have led the team’s offensive efforts this season. KCAC Freshman of the Year Jana Reichenberger led the way with 11.7 points and 6.8 rebounds per game, while junior Zeferin Bryan added 11.1 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. Fellow junior Kaitlin Tennyson led the Lady Builder guards, and averaged 7.9 points per game.

As a team, Southwestern shot 40.6 percent (674-1662) from the field this season, and 32.5 percent (184-566) from three-point range. The Lady Builders converted 67.1 percent (454-677) of their free throws, and out-rebounded their opponents, 42.5-40.0. Southwestern’s defense limited opponents to a 36.3 percent shooting clip on the season.

Men nail at-large berth

The Mountaineers will be sending the eighth-ranked men’s team to Point Lookout, Mo. to meet the Midland (Neb.) Warriors Wednesday at 8:15 a.m. PST in College of the Ozarks’ Keeter Gymnasium. Eastern Oregon picked up the second at-large berth awarded after missing out on the automatic berths that went with the two teams in the Cascade Collegiate Conference's tournament finals — Warner Pacific and Southern Oregon University. In the final poll released Wednesday evening, the Mountaineers dropped to eighth.

The Warriors have a 19-12 record and finished this year’s conference tournament just short of the GPAC Championship Game, falling to No.13 Dordt College in the semifinals by a one-point margin.

Heading into the NAIA National Tournament, Midland senior James Parrott, a First Team All-GPAC selection, leads the team in scoring with 19.2 points per game, while averaging team-highs in steals (1.9) and blocks (2.3). All-conference senior Jerome Vaughn paces the team in rebounds with 7.1 rebounds per game, and junior Ben Imig, also an all-conference athlete, leads in assists averaging 3.6 assists per game.
