EOU men’s track places second at Cascade Conference Championships

GRESHAM — What could have been? That’s the question the Mountaineers’ men’s track and field team is left to ponder after injuries plagued the team at the Cascade Conference Championships that concluded Saturday. The men finished second, while Concordia finished first. Three EOU sprinters ran with pain during the three-day event. Enter sprinter Nathan Schmidt. Battling a sore hamstring, Schmidt took home second in the 100-meter dash with a 11.19 mark. He finished third in the 200-meter dash (22.66). Adam Goulet brought home a first-place finish in the 800-meter dash with a time of 1:54.77. Doug Benson went the distance for the Mountaineers. He picked up a second-place finish in the 1,500-meter (3:53.13) and fifth in the 5,000-meter run (15:20.31). Lucas Ohmes finished first in the 110-meter hurdles with a 15.53 mark. Troy Blackburn and Cameron Starner teamed up to finish first and second, respectively, in the steeplechase. Blackburn clocked a 9:27.83 mark, and Starner finished in 9:33.19. Kirk Miller sacrificed his body for the team. Miller took first in the long jump by clearing 22 feet, 4.5 inches, but came away with a bruised foot. Marcella Bosch paced the women by defending her 800- and 1,500-meter wins last season. Bosch earned the Women’s Track Athlete of the Meet — an honor she captured last year. La Grande product Melissa Abesa finished fifth in the 100-meter dash with a 12.95 mark. Stephanie Windle set a meet record in the steeplechase with a 11:26.37 mark. She bested the mark of Northwest’s Ashley Terran (11:28) set in 2005. As a team EOU finished third overall. The Mountaineers will compete at the NAIA National Championships in the St. Louis beginning May 22. EOU NAIA championship qualifiersMen 1,500-meter run - Doug Benson.
