EOU opens conference play with a win

Olympia, Wash. —It took a while for the Eastern Oregon University men’s basketball team to get going in the opening game of the Cascade Collegiate Conference schedule.

The Mountaineers didn’t hit a field goal in the opening six minutes of the game, but found their rhythm after that, defeating the Evergreen State University 73-54.

Evergreen jumped out to a 10-1 lead before Craig Tucker made the first field goal of the game, but it took a little longer for EOU to grab the lead.

Kevin Attila connected on a 3-point shot, cutting the lead to 17-14 midway through the first half. Deonta Edwards hit a 3-point shot on the Mountaineers next possession, sparking a 13-3 run. EOU kept the momentum going and built a 34-25 lead by halftime.

The Mountaineers shot 38 percent from the floor in the first half, and held the Geoducks to 28 percent shooting in the half. EOU also forced eight turnovers in the half.

The Mountaineers built a 52-36 lead in the second half. Evergreen cut the lead to nine points, 54-45, but never got closer in front of its home crowd.

Tony Eackles Jr. led the Mountaineers with 17 points. Kylian Wood and Kalvin Johanson each recorded double doubles. Wood finished with 14 points and 13 rebounds, while Johanson scored 12 points and grabbed 19 rebounds.

Kyle Calhoun was the lone Geoduck in double figures, finishing with 22 points.

The Mountaineers will play Northwest University today at 7:30 p.m.
