EOU splits conference opener

HOW WEST THE WON: Kelly West led the Mountaineers to a split against NAIA No. 14 the College of Idaho Saturday. EOU lost the opening game 10-1, and bounced back to win the night cap 4-1 at Peggy Anderson field. THE OBSERVER/PAUL HARDER
The Mountaineers opened conference play at Peggy Anderson field against NAIA No. 14 College of Idaho Saturday.

EOU and the visiting  team sat through a 20 minutes snow delay in the first inning.

The Yotes  9-4, 1-1 CCC, had no problem heating back up when play resumed.

Daniyelle Villyard paced the College of Idaho with six RBI’s, hitting two of her three home runs in the first game.

Yotes’ pitcher Katie Zillner recorded seven strike outs, and allowing only two hits.

The Mountaineers,  2-3, 1-1 CCC,  dominated the field in a 4-1 win in Game 2.

Pitcher Kelly West had one of her best performances in her career at EOU.

West tallied seven strike outs while allowing only four hits. 

Iris Woodhead led the Mountaineers at the plate, going 2-of-4.

Woodhead drove in her first run of the year on a home run in the fifth inning and finished  the day with two RBI’s. 

Kimmy Peterson also collected two hits in the game. 

The split against with the Yotes was huge confidence builder for EOU.

The Mountaineers are still battling through early season injuries.

EOU will host Corban College at 3 p.m. Friday.

Concordia University will come to town Saturday for a twinbill.
