EOU tabs Barrett as new head coach

The Eastern Oregon University men’s basketball team has found the man to usher in its new era.

And he has a little Mountaineer blood in his veins.

EOU Interim Athletic Director Anji Weissenfluh announced in a statement Monday that Jared Barrett has been hired to replace the departed Isaac Williams.

Barrett joins the Eastern staff after spending the past year as an sssistant coach with Southern Utah University in Cedar City, Utah.

“We are so excited to bring Jared, an EOU alum, back to La Grande,” Weissenfluh said. “Since his time at Eastern he has gained valuable experience in various coaching roles, and those experiences are what will help him to be successful in the very competitive Cascade Conference.”

Barrett is a native of Rexburg, Idaho, but he played basketball for Eastern and was named the team’s most valuable player following the 1996-97 season.

He began his coaching career at EOU in 1998 as the junior varsity coach.

While serving as the junior varsity coach, Barrett implemented the team’s playbook, conducted tryouts and scheduled games. He was also responsible for the school’s youth basketball camps and served as the assistant strength and conditioning coach.

“I am extremely excited at the opportunity to come back and coach at my alma mater,” Barrett said. “I want to thank Anji Weissenfluh and President (Bob) Davies for the honor and responsibility of guiding these young men, both academically and athletically. Coach Williams has done an outstanding job and I want to continue with his success.”

Barrett brings a varied background of basketball experience with him to the position.

While at Southern Utah, Barrett worked as a recruiter and on-the-floor coach with scouting and game preparation. He also handled the scheduling for the
Thunderbirds.

Before joining the Southern Utah staff, Barrett spent three years at Washington State University as the coordinator of basketball operations.

He was responsible for executing summer camps, coordinating team travel and overseeing student-athlete academics. Barrett has also spent time as the top assistant coach at Utah Valley University and as an assistant at Sacramento State.
