The Eastern Oregon University women’s basketball team had no trouble with New Hope Christian over the weekend, picking up an 88-51 victory Friday and a 68-43 win Saturday to improve to 3-0 on the season.

“We were able to play a lot of people and they stepped in and did a good job,” EOU head coach Anji Weissenfluh said Friday. “They filled their roles. That’s what preseason games are all about, is finding those roles and that’s what we’re doing.”

The Deacons hung around early in Friday’s game. EOU led 17-11 with 10:58 remaining in the first half. But the Mountaineers went on a 15-0 run to extend the lead to 32-11 with 5:46 left.

Eastern Oregon took a 43-17 lead into the locker room at halftime.

“We have an extremely young team,” Weissenfluh said. “We have more underclassmen than upperclassmen, and that’s been unusual compared to the last four or five years. We’re still working on being strong, playing strong, having court awareness and playing with maturity.”

The Mountaineers didn’t take their foot off the gas in the second half, outscoring the Deacons 45-35 to cruise to the easy win.

Nicole Redd had a game-high 19 points and added eigh rebounds for EOU. Payton Parrish chipped in 13 points and both Jeni Hofert and Maloree Moss had 11.

The Mountaineers shot just 41 percent from the game, a number Weissenfluh said she would like to see the team improve on. The coach said the key for EOU this season will be tempo.

“It’s tempo for us,” she said. “We gotta push the tempo. We’re going to think we’re in better shape than other people and wear them down and see where we go from there.”

EOU 68, NHC 43

Saturday’s game was similar to Friday’s win, with the Deacons hanging around early only to see EOU take a 38-29 lead into halftime.

But the Mountaineers upped the defensive energy in the second half, holding New Hope Christian to just 14 points to pick up the win.
