EOU track competes at Linfield Events meet

McMINNVILLE —Sometimes average is good enough. To EOU track, it certainly was.

At the Linfield Combined Events Meet (Heptathlon and Decathlon), EOU was average in most events, but wound up solid across the board.

Kasie Gillespie, a 2007 NAIA Heptathlon All American, sits atop her 16-woman field. Joining her is pole vault specialist Cayla Weissert, who, in her first heptathlon competition, sits in 11th place. Also, Erin Ontko (12th place) and Carla Hoppie (16th place) are right behind.

For the men (decathlon), Chris Hoppie, sits in second place out of 17 participants. And La Grande High alum Nathan Humphreys (seventh place) was solid, as well, in his first decathlon.

Lucas Ohmes also faired well in several decathlon events.

It was a solid start, said EOU coach Ben Welch.

“The funny thing is, most of their events, they were kind of average, but they’re pretty solid across the board,” he said.

EOU will resume action today at 9 a.m.

Notes:  Harking back to March 1, Katie Clapp competed in a half martathon in Lewiston, Idaho, coming up just short of the NAIA provisional standard, despite windy weather. And on Saturday, in Olympia, Wash., Clapp took another shot at the NAIA marathon qualifying standard in a half marathon. She had cramps in her calf muscles, but her 1 hour, 33 minute and 21 second finish — an improvement of nearly three minutes — just missed the NAIA auto standard by 21 seconds.
