EOU tracksters bode well at Bronco Twilight

BOISE — EOU track competed at the Bronco Twilight Friday, facing five Division 1 schools in a tune up for upcoming conference meets.

Standing out was Quinten Baxter, whose toss in the shot put (50-feet, 2 3/4 inches) was a personal best, and three feet farther than the previous week.

In the hammer toss, Andy Munsey recorded a mark of 163 feet — which is three feet farther than his previous best.

The women’s 4 X 100-meter relay team consisting of Cora Beach, Melisa Abesa, Danielle Murphy and Chelsea Harmon (50.48) ran well.

In the 4 x 400-meter relay, Marcella Bosch, Grace DeBoodt, Stephanie Windle and Christy Pletan — three distance runners and a javelin thrower — put up the best time of the year for EOU (4:11.08).

Windle won the second heat of the 1,500-meter race (4:49.47), crushing her previous best time of 5:06. In the first heat of that race, Bosch (4:49.46) stood out, while Pletan placed fourth with a time 15 seconds off her personal best.

In the women’s 400 hurdles, EOU coach Ben Welch said Harmon was “absolutely stellar” in a race in which she was 2 seconds-plus faster than last week.

In the 200 meters, Abesa ran 26.62 — a “huge margin of improvement,” Welch said, considering it was a full second faster than her personal best.

Back to the men.

Adam Goulet won his heat in the 400-meter race (50.46). In the 800-meter race, Doug Benson was leading the first heat, but after 450 meters, his foot was stepped upon, forcing a large tear on his shoe, knocking him down.

“It was too bad because he was running, really, really well, and was leading most of the way,” Welch said. “It’s just a pity.”

In this race, four EOU men ran a lifetime personal best, and Jeff Roy won the “B” heat.

And in the 4 X 400-meter relay, Goulet, Benson, Roy and Fernando Morales ran a time of 3:24.28.

Next for EOU is the conference meet action Thursday at 4 p.m. at Mt. Hood Community College, hosted by Concordia College.

Is EOU ready?

“We hope so,” Welch laughed. “We had some good performances this weekend.

“Hopefully we got things dialed in, and we’ll be in the mix next week.”
