The experience showed Friday evening for the La Grande Rain Roofing American Legion baseball team.

Rain Roofing routed a young Vancouver Crusaders team 9-2 and 11-1 in a Legion doubleheader at Optimist Field. La Grande had 21 hits over 12 innings and played solid defense.

"The biggest thing that hits you in the face is the experience factor," La Grande coach Wes McAllaster said.

That experience came into play at the plate in two big innings. A seven-run second inning highlighted the first game, while Rain Roofing scored nine runs in the first inning of the second game.

"We're starting to swing it — that's encouraging," McAllaster said.

In the first game's second inning, La Grande had already scored three runs when Zack Glasser doubled home two more runs. Jeremy George, Aaron Thomas and Tanner Mellinger had RBI singles in that inning. Tyler Davis drove home a run with a sacrifice fly and Shane Slover was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Glasser later added a solo home run in the sixth inning, and Smith's double later in the inning scored Davis.

Corey Royal got the win on the mound by throwing 90 pitches and giving up just four hits, two walks and three hit batters.

Dollen Stroup, pitching for the first time this Legion season, got the win in the second game, giving up four hits.

"Corey and Dollen both threw well," McAllaster said.

Stroup helped his cause with a 4-for-4 performance at the plate. His two-run double capped the nine-run first, and he added an RBI with a single in the fifth.

The game ended on the 10-run mercy rule in the fifth when George scored on a wild pitch after Stroup's single.

Jason Smith had a two-run double in the first inning, and Mellinger, Slover and Glasser also drove in runs.

Thomas and Smith each had four hits in the doubleheader.

The teams will play a single, nine-inning game at noon today.
