Eagle Cap race nearing start

Eagle Cap race offers viewers many chances to get out and see the racers

JOSEPH — The running of the Eagle Cap Extreme Sled Dog Race is this week and Wallowa County is gearing up for the 10th running of one of the West’s best run Iditarod and Yukon Quest qualifiers.

Wednesday Race Central opens from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Joseph Community Center in Joseph at the corner of South Lake and East First streets. 

Vet checks were today on Joseph’s Main Street at 9 a.m. and in Enterprise on Main Street at 1 p.m. 

At 6:30 p.m. tonight the pre-race potluck will be held at the Joseph Community Center. Mushers will draw for their bib numbers. It’s a chance for fans to sit and talk with the racers and their families and learn about this unique sport. People are asked to bring a dish to share. Paper goods, plastic-ware, and drinks will be provided.

Race Center opens Thursday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. at the Joseph Community Center. 

Come by for the latest race information, treats and hot drinks, information on sled dogs and mushing, DVDs, and kids’ corner with activities, books, and scheduled kids’ events. 

Eagle Cap Extreme Race Start of the first stage of the 62-mile pot race and the 100 and 200 mile races is Thursday, January 23 at 1 p.m. at Ferguson Ridge Ski Area. Shuttles start at 10:45 a.m. from Tucker Down Road. Cheer on the teams as they leave the chute, Merchandise and concession sales will be available.  Please leave personal pets at home.

The Salt Creek Summit Crossing is Thursday between 2 and 4 p.m. See the racers up close on the trail. Hike or ski 1/4 mile to see mushers on the loop. Sno Park passes required. Passes available for purchase at Joseph Hardware, Sports Corral, Outlaw Motor Sports, or Enterprise DMV.

The race finishes for all races are at the base of Ferguson Ridge. The pot race finishes are Thursday and Friday evening, the 100-mile race Friday morning and the 200-mile racers will come in between early morning and early evening on Saturday. Drive right up to the Ferguson Ridge Ski Area parking lot to watch the teams finish. Saturday you can ski while you wait.

The  awards banquet and dinner is at the Joseph Community Center, Saturday, Jan. 25 starting at 5:30 p.m. This is an opportunity to listen to the mushers share tales from the trail. There is also a live and silent auction fundraiser. Entertainment will be by Leon Brown from Baker City.

Ticket prices are $20 for the general public, $18 for members, $12 for volunteers and handlers, $8 for children 5 to 12, children 4 and under are free as are Mushers, Eagle Cap Extreme Coordinators, and Major Race Sponsors. Tickets may be purchased at Race Central (Joseph Community Center) from Wednesday through Saturday or at the door. Advanced tickets recommended, limited seating.

All other Eagle Cap Extreme Sled Dog Race events are free and open to the public.
