Eagles shake things up

UNION — Someone shook Joseph up like soda in a bottle.

But this time, a little carbonation remained. By the time the pressure released the Eagles walked away with a sweep against Imbler, 9-8 and 3-0 Saturday.

In the first two league match-ups, Joseph looked like it had been left out too long — a little flat. The Eagles dropped  opening games against Union and Wallowa. Then rebounded to split both doubleheaders.

“I’m not sure what the problem is,” Eagles head coach Tony Gross said. “That’s been our problem all year long. We’re young, so maybe that’s it.”

Imbler led 8-5 after six innings, but the Eagles took flight in the bottom of the sixth.

Joseph cut the lead to 8-6.

The Panthers sent Nick Thompson to the hill to close out the game.

But the pesky Eagles had a different idea, tying the game and sending it to extra innings.

Joseph came up with three hits in the bottom of the eighth to pull out the come-from-behind win.

“That was big win for us,” Joseph senior Corby Makin said. “We used the momentum carrying over to the second game.”

Game 2 turned into a shaky pitchers duel.

Imbler’s ace Thompson matched up against Makin.

Both teams put runners on base, it was a matter of who could score those runners that made the difference.

“You know it’s not going to be easy when you go up against (Thompson),” Makin said. “You have to work for what you get. Then you just hope it’s enough.”

The Eagles manufactured runs, and took advantage of miscues from a young team.

Joseph struck first on a sacrifice fly and a passed ball.

The only other run of the game came with two outs in the fourth inning.

Thompson opened the inning with two strikeouts.

But an error by the center fielder, and an error by the catcher allowed two runners to reach base.

Kyle Stewart tacked on a run with a single.

The Eagles right-hander kept Imbler off balance with off-speed pitches.

After allowing a lead-off double to open the game, Makin scattered three hits the rest of the way.

He recorded seven strikeouts, and walked two.

However, Makin didn’t breeze through the game. But a gentle wind did help him out.

In the fifth, Imbler put two runners on via an error and a single.

Taylor McIntosh crushed a pitch to straight away center.

With no wind it’s a tie game. Instead, it fell harmlessly into Gavin Bayne’s glove.

“It seems those are the breaks we get,” Imbler head coach Monty McIntosh said. “They don’t go our way. Mistakes are magnified in this game. Losing the first game hurt. We needed that momentum.”

Both team left 10 runners stranded apiece.

Thompson finished with seven strikeouts and walked two. He allowed three runs, one earned, on six hits.

Imbler will travel to Elgin for a 2 p.m. twin bill Tuesday.

Joseph will travel to Adrian Saturday. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.

Cubs cruise past Adrian

ADRIAN — The Enterprise/Joseph softball team rolled through Adrian Friday.

Adrian was left in ruin after a 13-2 and 25-4 sweep.

“We actually started out a little slow,” Cubs head coach Travis Huffman said. “Once we got our legs under us we were ok. It’s just nice to get out on the field and play.”

Theresa Stangel picked up both wins, allowing seven hits in 10 innings.

The senior also went to work in the batter’s box. Stangel finished with four hits on the day — three doubles and a triple.

Ashley Granning collected three hits in Game 2.

Enterprise/Joseph will travel to Union for a noon doubleheader Friday.
