Joseph grabs opening round upset against Cove

BAKER CITY — All tournaments should have at least one upset. The Joseph boys basketball provided it for the Old Oregon League postseason tournament in the final game of the day.

The Eagles entered the game as the No. 6 seed, finishing the season 1-9 during the regular season in league play. It didn’t look that way during a 58-43 win against No. 3 seed Cove Thursday.

It could have and should have been an easier win, but the Eagles struggled from the free-throw line. Joseph shot 19-35 from the charity stripe, going 12-25 in the second half.

Cove went to the foul line three times in each half, and finished 4-of-6 for the game.

Sam Beckman pushed the Eagles’ lead to 10 points with 3:10 left in the third quarter, 38-28. Moments before, Cove’s Derrick Murchison fouled out of the game. Murchison had a team-high 11 points when he fouled out with 3:40 left.

Cayden DeLury finished with a team-high 22 points, while Beckman finished with 13 points.

Freshman Brandon McGilvray led the Leopards with 14 points, while Colton DeMeerleer added 11 points. DeMeerleer also grabbed 11 rebounds.

Joseph will play Powder Valley at 2:15 p.m. today.

Spartans hold off Cougars

BAKER CITY — Sports are often referred to as games of inches, but it took a different meaning Thursday night. Wallowa didn’t have enough of them at the Old Oregon League postseason tournament.

The Cougars boys basketball team fell to a taller Pine Eagle team 57-53, with rebounding playing a big part of the game.

The Spartans used a 45-23 advantage on the glass to grab the win, including an 18-5 advantage on the offensive end. Those second chance opportunities turned into points that helped Pine Eagle move on to the next round.

Pine Eagle’s Colter Marks led the way with 20 points and 11 rebounds.

Wallowa cut the lead to 54-53 after a Chandler Burns basket with 50.6 seconds left to play, but turned the ball over three times in the final minute.

The Spartans surged ahead after trailing 10-9 after the first quarter, grabbing a 26-17 halftime lead.

Chaz Murray led Wallowa with 14 points, scoring 12 in the second half. Karl Wellens went 3-of-6 from behind the arc, and finished with 11 points. Cole Hafer and Spencer Shelton added nine and eight points, respectively.

BAKER CITY — The key to Joseph’s game nearly got broken.

Fortunately, it was just a sprain for Satori Albee, who scored a team-high 12 points for the Eagles girls basketball team in a must-win game at the Old Oregon League postseason tournament Thursday.

Albee, a sophomore, came down on the foot of a Wallowa player in the second quarter, with Joseph in front 18-12. She had six points in the game at the half. Albee scored time after time with the left-handed hook shot, helping key an 11-3 advantage in the closing quarter to break open a five-point game after three quarters.

The Cougars struggled shooting the ball, making 6-of-51 attempts from the field. Wallowa was led by Kristyn Young with eight points, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the balanced scoring of the Eagles.

Breanna Gibson added 12 points for the Eagles, while Hailee McClure scored seven points.

Joseph struggled from the field, too, but bounced back in the second half. The Eagles shot 42 percent from the field, after making 25 percent in the opening half.

Macey Frei added six points for the Cougars.

Joseph will play No. 1 seed Imbler at 6:30 p.m. tonight.

Badgers cruise past Spartans

BAKER CITY — Bailee Allen didn’t want her team to worry about the season being over with a loss. So she took matters into her own hands in the opening round of the Old Oregon League postseason tournament Thursday.

Allen made her first five attempts of the game, helping Powder Valley to a 61-28 win against Pine Eagle. Allen scored 12 points in the first half, and finished with 19 points. She added 10 rebounds.

Alexandra Colton helped Allen, scoring 10 points of her own in the first half, and Powder Valley built a 40-14 lead capped by a 3-pointer by Annelia Jimeniz at the buzzer in the second quarter. Powder Valley averaged 43 points per game during the regular season.

Powder Valley head coach Allen Bingham was able to start resting his starters in the third quarter.

Colton finished the night with 14 points, and was the leading factor to the 34 turnovers by Pine Eagle. The constant defensive pressure forced the Spartans into tough shots. Pine Eagle shot 17 percent from the field, while the Badgers finished at 41 percent.

Sally Blair finished with seven points and nine rebounds.

Pine Eagle was led by Jamie Butler with 11 points.

Powder Valley will play Cove at 12:30 p.m. today.
