Mountaineers named Adidas team of the week after weekend sweep
The Eastern Oregon University women’s basketball team has been named the Adidas Team of the Week, the Cascade Collegiate Conference announced Sunday.
The No. 10-ranked Mountaineers defeated NAIA D-I Lewis-Clark State College 62-36 on Saturday. EOU defeated NCAA D-III Whitworth College 76-61 Sunday.
Against the LCSC Warriors, senior Korrie Bourn led EOU with 17 points and seven rebounds. Against the Pirates of Whitworth senior Brooke Randall netted 20 points.
Eastern Oregon (11-2, 2-0 CCC) owns a five game winning streak and will head to the opposite side of the state next week to take on Southern Oregon and Oregon Tech. The Dec. 14-15 games mark a return to CCC action.
In the latest NAIA Division 2 poll released Tuesday, Eastern Oregon jumped one spot to No. 9.
Concordia of Nebraska was the top-ranked women’s basketball team, followed by Indiana Wesleyan and Morningside (Iowa).
College of the Ozarks (Mo.) was fourth, just ahead of Davenport (Mich.) and Briar Cliff (Iowa).
St. Francis of Indiana and Iowa’s Northwestern were listed just ahead of the Mountaineers.
College of Idaho is the only other CCC team ranked inside the top-25. C of I held steady at No. 22.
Randall an honorable mention in CCC player of the week running
Southern Oregon’s Melissa Sweat has been chosen the Red Lion women’s basketball player of the week in the Cascade Collegiate Conference, but Eastern Oregon’s Brooke Randall was an honorable mention in the voting.
Randall was a key contributor to the Mountaineers’ victories over Lewis-Clark State and Whitworth over the weekend.
Against the Warriors she scored 12 points and grabbed two rebounds.
In the win over Whitworth Sunday the senior guard put in 20 points, had three rebounds, three assists and two steals.
For the season, Randall is averaging a team-best 13.5 points on 40 percent shooting (62 for 153) and has hit 20 of 68 three-pointers.
She is 48th in the NAIA Div. II in total scoring (176) this year.
Sweat, a junior from Bakersfield, Calif., connected on better than 60 percent of her shots and averaged 23.5 points per game in a pair of weekend road victories over Simpson and Cal-State Maritime.
For the season, Sweat ranks second in NAIA Div. II with a 66.7 shooting percentage and fifth in three-point percentage at .514, while ranking sixth in scoring at 19.7 points per game.
Concordia’s Malori Dixon was also an honorable mention nominee despite losses to Pacific Lutheran and George Fox last weekend.
