Oregon Tech came into Quinn Coliseum ranked No. 24 in the nation. After Saturday, the Eastern Oregon women ought to get some attention from the national pollsters.

The women played one of their best all-around games in the year in completely controlling Tech 71-53. Both teams came in to the game vying for first place, and afterward, Eastern found itself with a 7-1 Cascade Collegiate Conference tally, all alone in first. Eastern is 13-2 overall.

Tricia Haddock had eight points and 10 assists, breaking the all-time Eastern Oregon career assists record held by her coach, Anji Weissenfluh.

Jamie Jo Cant scored 18, Michelle Kinley 16 and Christie Weaver 13.

The game was fairly close early, as Eastern held a 15-12 lead midway through the first half. However, after a Mountaineer 13-0 run to make it 28-12, the game was never in doubt again. Eastern held a double-digit lead the rest of the way.

Weissenfluh said the Mountaineers have played some solid halves this season, but this was by far the women's best game from start to finish, soundly beating a good, solid team.

"We played for more than 20 minutes," said Weissenfluh.

Cory Nelson didn't score, but she led the Mountaineers with seven rebounds. She thinks the Mountaineers are showing the rest of the conference that they are a hard team to defend. Eastern is leading the conference in scoring with only one player (Cant) among the top 10 individual scorers.

"Different people have stepped up all year. We're so versatile," she said.

Nelson also said the feeling after sweeping Tech and Southern, two of the top teams in the conference, is "amazing."

"Right now everyone is so pumped. They're screaming in the locker room," she said.

In Tuesday's Observer, read about Oregon Tech's Lindsey Carmichael coming back home to play against her old high school teammate Christie Weaver, as well as more on Tricia Haddock breaking her coach's career assists record.
