ELGIN — He was in pain with every inhale, every exhale, every needed breath for sucking precious air through those sore ribs.

Sweat rolled down his face, dripping underneath that white cowboy hat. Mud was smeared across his forehead, thanks to smashing into the Stampede Grounds’ dirt surface.

Tylee Lanham winced. He grimaced. He felt the wrath from that angry bull — a goodbye smashing gift into the dirt after bucking atop it for eight seconds.

But in between the teeth clenching and soreness, Lanham sported a smile as big as Elgin.

Sore ribs? No problem.

First place is pain relief.

“He stepped right in my kidney and he was pretty fat,” said Lanham, 20, of Sweet, Idaho, the lone bullrider Sunday in this 62nd annual Elgin Stampede to earn a cash prize. “It’s a little sore, but money makes me feel better.”

It’s the second consecutive victory in this region for Lanham, who took first place at the Eastern Oregon Livestock Show, as well.

And it’s the second consecutive Elgin Stampede in which a Lanham took first place. Last year, Zeb Lanham, 24, was the winner.

Now it’s brother Tylee’s turn.

“It’s pretty cool,” Tylee Lanham said. “It’s always good when your brothers win.  It’s a lot nicer when you win money, but you always root for your brother.”

Highlight of the day

Call him a bull on a mission.

Daniel Dictson was in danger, running from an 1,800-pound beast that was looking for a victim.

It snorted, drooled, and dug its feet into the track, tossing back dirt with every step, heading toward this kid from Hendo, Wash.

Dictson ran faster. So did the bull. Dictson picked up his pace.  The bull did, too.

Finally, Dictson reached the light-yellow Coors barrel — needed protection — allowing him to escape the wrath of this ready-to-spear bull.

So the bull stopped. It bucked. It looked like it said to itself, “No Dictson? Who’s next?”

He bucked. He turned. He charged and speared doll “Hillary Clinton” — its name according to PA announcer Steve Kenyon — launching her airborne, drawing oohs and aahs from the grandstand.

And the bull wasn’t done.

He bucked. He turned. He charged toward a bullfighter, still full of anger. It bobbed those horns up and down, zeroing in on another potential victim, but this human being found safety, too, climbing and jumping over the green-poled fence, just above the white “Dodge Rodeo” sign, and out of harm’s way.

Two humans safe.

One Hillary doll done.

One angry, unsatisfied bull.

“I was just trying to get out of the way,” Dictson said. “If I didn’t get to that barrel, I think he was going to run me over.”
