ATHENA — The Huskies volleyball team fulfilled the saying on their lime-green warm-ups — playing as one. Elgin took down No. 1 Weston-McEwen in three games 25-19, 25-22, 25-23. “This has been an amazing team to coach,” Huskies head coach Twila Ivins said. “These girls stick together. We knew we could do it, but didn’t necessarily see it coming in three games.” In Game 1, the start didn't indicate what was coming as Elgin fell behind 5-0.“Our warm-ups weren’t very good,” Ivins said. “When the first rotation got those points I was a little worried. The Huskies bounced back to take a 16-14 lead, and controlled the game the rest of the way. Game 3 went wire-to-wire, with Weston-McEwen leading 18-14. Chantelle Malone served Elgin into the lead, 19-18, and the Huskies went on to close out the match. Malone paced Elgin with eight kills. Karly Knapp and Tara Ludwig finished with six and five kills apiece. Rachel Jones had four blocks. Elgin picked up a pair of wins at the Elgin 4-way Saturday. The Huskies beat Heppner in four games 25-22, 21-25, 28-26 and 25-21. Elgin then downed Stanfield in three games 25-8, 25-11 and 25-11.
