UNION — Another year, another Pepsi Invitational success.

Medals. Trophies. The Cove Comet kindly helping out all the way from Gresham. Just a good day on a warm day at Union High.

Good day? Great for Elgin.

Huskies coach Chad Peck & Co. walked away as the championship girls team (106.5 points), propelled by four first- place finishes from Jess McClune.

Also leading the way was Megan Jarrell (shot put, second place), Ariel Fruitts (javelin, third), Susan Jones (100-meters, third) and Jade Silver (high jump, fourth).

But there were others, too.

“We had a lot of other girls contribute with low placing,” Peck said. “That’s good because that’s what we need to be successful come district time.

“We needs those fifth, sixth and seventh places.”

Crane won the boys side (91 points), followed by distance-powerhouse Union (86 points).

The Bobcats dominated the 1,500-meter race, led by Chris Fasel placing first. Behind him was Tom Sheehy, Michael Cox and Gabriel O’Reilly.

Fasel won the 800-meter race (2:10.89), as well, while Sheehy  won the 3,000 meters (10:07).

“We’re extremely strong distance wise,” Union coach Brad Dunten said. “The kids really showed it today.”

And Pepsi showed valuable support by spending nearly $400 on trophies and medals for this track meet.

“I’d like to thank Pepsi for all the support and success of the second Pepsi Invitational,” Dunten said. “They’re a huge help.”

So was the help of Jim “The Cove Comet” Puckett, who earned this moniker in the mid-1950s when he broke all sorts of track records at Cove High.

He traveled from Gresham. He was the official starter. He kept events flowing like water over a beautiful fountain.

“He’s an unbelievable guy,” Dunten said. “Our meet probably wouldn’t have ran as well if it wasn’t for him.”
