ELGIN — The Elgin girls basketball team got down early, fought back late, but was unable to get over the hump in a 37-34 loss to Heppner Saturday.

“We played better, but just had too many turnovers tonight to win,” Elgin coach Greg Oveson said.

Heppner used a 9-1 run midway through the first quarter to take a 13-10 lead after one quarter.

The Mustangs lived in the passing lanes throughout the game, coming up with multiple steals and deflections on lazy passes by Elgin.

Heppner took its biggest lead of the game in the second quarter at 26-16, and led 28-16 at intermission.

The first couple of minutes into the third quarter looked a lot like early in the game, with Heppner scoring some easy baskets and Elgin struggling.

Then the Huskies buckled down on the defensive side, and that led to offense.

“We did a lot better with our half-court defense in the second half,” Oveson said. “That’s what got us back into the game.”

Elgin only trailed 30-28 after the third quarter.

With 4:10 left in the fourth, Elgin tied the game up for the first time since early in the first quarter.

A Heppner 3-pointer with 2:20 remaining in the game gave Heppner the lead back at 37-34.

Elgin had a couple of opportunities to tie the game with Heppner missing free throws late, but the Huskies had a couple of turnovers and failed to get a shot off at the end.

“I thought we were a little hesitant in the fourth quarter. Nobody wanted to step up and take the shot. I want four or five kids out there that want to shoot the ball with the game on the line,” Oveson said.

Chantele Malone led Elgin with eight points, while Karly Knapp chipped in with six. Tara Ludwig and Rachelle Southard finished with five points each.

Bryanna Rust had a game-high 13 points for Heppner, while Torri Lovgren had 10 points.

Friday, the Elgin girls basketball team scored a win over Stanfield 35-29.

Cheyanne Predmore had 14 points for the Huskies, while Karly Knapp finished with seven and Tara Ludwig had six points.

The Huskies trailed 10-2 after the first quarter, but bounced back by outscoring Stanfield 22-11 over the next two quarters to take a 24-21 lead into the fourth.

There Elgin was able to edge Stanfield and hang on for the close victory in Blue Mountain Conference play. Full stats weren’t available for Stanfield.

Heppner took a 15-4 lead after one quarter, and stretched it to 24-10 going into halftime. Enterprise found some offense in the third quarter, outscoring the Mustangs 17-8 to cut the game to just five points with one quarter remaining.

The Outlaws cut into the lead even more in the fourth, getting it to one point just a minute in.

But Heppner would knock down its free throws down the stretch to hang on for the win.
