CRESWELL — A gorgeous day led to a gorgeous round at the Emerald Valley Golf Club. The Enterprise boys golf team ended Day 1 in second, with a team score of 325. Westside Christian turned in a 306. “We’ll see what happens,” Outlaws head coach Mike Crawford said. “Our goal was to be in first, but this is what we are working with. (Westside Christian) is a veteran group. It will be tough to overcome 19 shots.” Dakota Hull sits in third-place with a 78. Alex Harding, of Westside Christian, leads the tournament after an even par 72. Cole Sajonia carded a 79, and is tied for fifth. “We want to get three players inside in the top-10,” Crawford said. “That’s still a possibility.” Marcus Anderson and Nick Januzzi are tied for 15th after shooting 84s. “Sometimes you have to let go and just play,” Crawford said. “(Marcus and Nick) might have been pressing a little. They certainly have the game to make it happen.” Tyler Harshfield of Wallowa turned in an 85.

Bruce leads EnterpriseREDMOND — Everything came through a filtered glass of perspective at the 4A/3A/2A/1A Girls State Golf Tournament. Enterprise junior Heather Bruce’s hopes of finishing in the top-five diminished after an opening round of 91. “She’s got to let it go,” Outlaws head coach Mike Crawford said. “(Heather) is still more than capable of getting into the top-10.” Bruce got off to a strong start, shooting 40 on her first nine holes of the day. Two holes added eight strokes to her score. Bruce received a lesson on the par-4 second hole — her 11th of the day. She took a 10. Instead of taking a one-stoke penalty for an unplayable lie, Bruce hit. The ball moved six inches and went out-of-bounds. “We’ve got to adjust her goals now,” Crawford said. La Grande came close to meeting its goal of shooting less than 400, finishing with a 402. The Tigers sit in seventh place. Keri Urbanski turned in a 97. Brenna Christison provided the surprise, shooting an even 100.
