Enterprise girls take Ione tournament title
IONE — The Enterprise girls basketball team improved its record to 3-0 with a pair of victories at the Ione Basketball Bonanza.
The Outlaws defeated Riverside 53-19 Friday and downed Ione 46-29 Saturday.
Against the Pirates, Enterprise grabbed a 13-6 halftime lead and stretched it to 24-14 at halftime.
But the Outlaws allowed only five points in the second half while putting in 30 to run away with the win.
“We came out the same way we did against Wallowa,” coach Mike Crawford said.
“We pressured them and they didn’t really handle it well. I think our pace just wore them down.”
Hayly Riggs had a game-high 19 points to lead the Outlaws.
Marta Stangel added nine and Myranda McFetridge and McKenna Miller scored seven.
Kylie Willis added four, Amy Edison and Carsen Sajonia scored three, and Hannah Schaafsma put in two.
Jackie Lezama led Riverside with six points, and Michell Gonzalez finished with five.
Things were closer against Ione.
In the first half anyway.
The Outlaws led 18-13 at halftime but put together a 19-6 third quarter to blow the game open.
“In the first half both teams had an up-tempo style,” Crawford said.
“But I think we were one gear too fast. We were missing some easy shots. So I told the girls to tone it down a notch and we score 19 in the third quarter.”
Riggs put in 21 points in the win. Stangel added six, Sajonia scored five, and Schaafsma, Willis and Edison all had four.
Miller finished with two.
Shadow Kendrick had a team-high seven points for Ione.
Stacee Halvorson scored six and both Emily Holland and Jessie Flynn had four.
Enterprise will host its Winter Classic tournament starting Friday.
Elgin, Joseph and Pine Eagle are scheduled to compete. The tournament wraps up Saturday.
