 Friday Girls Prep Basketball Preview

Old Oregon League

Wallowa (5-7 overall, 1-1 OOL) at Cove (5-7 overall, 1-0 OOL), 6 p.m.

Wallowa takes to the road trying to keep the momentum going after picking up a win in its league opener without Morgan Waters. Kristyn Young and Taylor Harshfield filled the void left by Waters’ appearance against the Spartans, but face a tougher test against the Leopards this week.

Cove got stronger last week with the return of Hailey Hulse to the floor. The junior provides scoring and rebounding inside, and takes pressure off Makayla Murchison inside. The Leopards have won three of four headed into an early season battle for second place.

Joseph (2-10 overall, 0-1 OOL) at Powder Valley (6-4 overall, 0-1 OOL), 6 p.m.

Powder Valley heads home looking to get back on track after dropping its league opener to Imbler. Bailee Allen, Alexandra Colton and Sally Blair were the only three players to score for the Badgers in the game, and will need some of their teammates to put points in the scorebook. But, Powder Valley has a favorable match-up for its pressure defense against Joseph.

The Eagles will face a tougher test this week than they did the league opener against Cove. Colton and Allen will harass the Joseph ball handlers. Turnovers will either take the Eagles out of the game, or if Joseph can limit them, pull off an upset.

Imbler (10-3 overall, 2-0 OOL) at Pine Eagle (2-9 overall, 0-1 OOL), 6 p.m.

Imbler got the shots to fall against Powder Valley last week, and Ally Fullerton and Malia Mills will try to continue that trend against Pine Eagle. Defense won’t be an issue for the Panthers, one of the top defensive teams in the state, allowing 33 points per game. The bigger question is whether the shots will keep falling.

Pine Eagle will face a tough challenge, scoring 29 points per game this season, and had a season-low 22 points last week in a loss to Wallowa. The Spartans are looking to snap a four-game losing streak, and trying to pick up their first win at home this season.

Blue Mountain Conference

Elgin (4-9 overall, 2-4 BMC) at (Heppner 5-8 overall, 1-5 BMC), 6 p.m.

The Outlaws open a three game road stretch in conference play, needing a win to stay close to the pack for the conference tournament. Hayley Riggs will need more help this week for Enterprise to snap a four-game losing streak on the road. Seniors Tiffanie George and Hannah Schaafsma will need to contribute more against the Prospectors.

Grant Union looks to push its winning streak to three games, which would be a season high. The Prospectors picked up two important conference wins against the bottom of the league in Stanfield and Heppner last weekend.

Union (12-2 overall, 5-1 BMC) at Irrigon (10-2 overall, 4-2 BMC), 6 p.m.

Union looks to extend its four-game winning streak, and keep pace with Pilot Rock at the top of the conference standings against Irrigon. The Bobcats are starting to see their younger players like Elly Wells and Delanie Kohr contribute a little more. Union will face the top defense in the conference. The Knights allow 31 points per game this season.

Irrigon will try for its fifth conference win of the season, but will need to score more than 30 points to beat Union. The Knights defeated Weston-McEwen 29-28 in their last game. But, the Bobcats can put points on the board, they are currently fifth in Class 2A at 50.9 points per game.

Enterprise (5-8 overall, 2-4 BMC) at Grant Union (5-5 overall, 3-3 BMC), 6 p.m.

The Outlaws open a 3-game road stretch in conference play, needing a win to stay close to the pack for the conference tournament. Hayley Riggs will need more help this week for Enterprise to snap a 4-game losing streak on the road. Seniors Tiffanie George and Hannah Schaafsma will need to contribute more against the Prospectors.

Grant Union looks to push its winning streak to three games, which would be a season high. The Prospectors picked up two important conference wins against the bottom of the league in Stanfield and Heppner.
